The comedy masterpiece The General, by Clyde Bruckman and Buster Keaton, set during the American Civil War told the story of an engineer rejected by the Confederate army because he was deemed more valuable as a railway engineer. Unaware of the circumstances, his fiancé and family mistakenly think him a coward. The situation is resolved through the hero's re-capturing of his own train, 'The General', the simultaneous rescue of his fiancé and the defeat of the Unionists and a commission in the Confederate army.
The Stenberg Brother's poster cleverly capture both the plot and the playful mood of the film. The train moves between emeny lines, reflected in the negative and positive trains that feature in each half of the poster. This is the second version of the Stenbergs' poster design for the film, clearly marking a difference from the earlier version when the brothers had not yet seen the film.
