The celebrated trotter Confidence was bought by Louis Bonaparte in New York for 750 guineas, and later presented by him to the Duke of Richmond. Unbeaten throughout his career, he won his final match over two miles across Sunbury Common on 18th October 1839 in 5 minutes 39 seconds. Confidence was also painted by John Frederick Herring, Sen.
