Born in Tokyo, Ogawa Tamejiro (1851-1926) was a successful banker who rose to become the vice president of Hyaku Sanju Bank. He later became the president of Hanshin Electric Railway company, and played a significant role in the merger of the two Japanese banks, Hyaku Sanju Bank and Shoryu Bank.
Ogawa formed his collection after the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911, when a vast number of objects from the court were sold by the imperial family. His collection was greatly inspired by Luo Zhenyu and Kyoto Imperial University sinologist Naito Konan, and includes 5 National Treasures and 32 Important Cultural Properties.
