Tycho Brahe, 1602
BRAHE, Tycho (1546-1601). Astronomiae instauratae progymnasmata. Quorum haec prima pars de restitutione motuum solis et lunae stellarumque innerantium tractat. Et praetereá de adamiranda nova stella anno 1572 exortâ luculenter agit. Edited by Johannes Kepler. Uraniborg and Prague: 1602.

First edition of an important and rare work which was ‘the foundation on which Kepler, and later Newton, built their astronomical systems’ (Sparrow).

This posthumously published work includes the Danish astronomer's numerous observations made from the island of Hven, including the new star of 1572, as well as revisions of the solar and lunar theories and a detailed star catalogue that would eventually result in Kepler's Tabulae Rudolphinae. The work was finished after the author’s death by Kepler who added an appendix and index. Most of the sheets had been printed on Tycho's private press at his observatory at Uranienborg on the island of Hven. Houzeau-Lancaster 2700; Sparrow, Milestones of Science 30.

Quarto (230 x 168mm). Woodcut illustrations and diagrams, some full-page (occasional browning, light spotting, or faint dampstaining, more noticeable in a few leaves, very minor repairs at some extreme corners). 20th-century green crushed morocco by P. Gozzi, Modena, spine in compartments with raised bands gilt, elaborately gilt borders, green silk endleaves.
