‘Discovering MacDonald Gill’ by Caroline Walker and Angela & Andrew Johnston

EVENT DATE: 10 November 2014

Famed for the vibrant, decorative maps of London he produced for Frank Pick (first chief executive of the London Underground), MacDonald (Max) Gill (1884-1947) is considered among the most skilled and engaging British graphic artists of the twentieth century. His designs, unique in their wit and playfulness, served not primarily as functioning maps but as a humorous means of entertaining the British public of the early 1900s.

We are delighted that Caroline Walker, MacDonald Gill’s great-niece, and Angela & Andrew Johnston will join us to give a talk on the legacy of this great poster artist. The event will coincide with the view for the Vintage Posters sale which will take place on 13 November and include a wonderful and rarely seen selection of both Gill’s artist’s proofs and his completed map designs.
