Wine & Spirits 2023 Autumn live auctions combined sale total: HK$53,543,750 / US$6,901,045

Christie’s opened its Hong Kong Autumn Auction Season with an impressive single-owner wine sale – The Dr A. Botenga Cellar: Six Decades of Collecting Part 1, which realised a sale total of HK$42,029,000 / US$5,416,954 and achieved sell-through-rates of 98% by lot and by value.

Led by iconic offerings from renowned Bordeaux Châteax and Burgundy Domaines, the outstanding results underscored the quality of this collection and the strength of Christie's pricing strategy. The sale attracted global participation from 13 countries across 3 continents, and 61% of bids were placed online. New, younger collectors were enticed by the sale, with millennials accounting for 67% of new buyers.

Through its meticulous sale curations in Asia, featuring the most iconic and coveted designs from renowned maisons, Christie’s is consistently presenting exciting and unique collecting opportunities for fashion lovers worldwide.

This record annual sale total was realised on 25 November 2023, after Christie’s Handbags & Accessories live auction in Hong Kong reached HK$54,986,400 (US$7,086,983), and was 94% sold by lot, achieving a hammer price 115% against the low estimate.

Achieved the highest ever annual sale total of HK$683 million / US$88 million, more than doubled pre-pandemic level

Christie’s Watches is pleased to announce that it has achieved the highest ever annual sale total of HK$683 million / US$88 million, more than doubled pre-pandemic level. Maintaining market leadership in Asia, Christie’s Watches now has the second highest Hong Kong autumn sale total at HK$222 million / US$29 million.

Important Watches auction reached a sale total of HK$160,409,100 / US$20,674,503, with 95% sold by lot, and 25% of the lots sold over high estimate.

The Second Highest Autumn Auction Total for the Category since 2017 in Asia

Christie’s Hong Kong is proud to announce that the Magnificent Jewels & The Pink Supreme live auction achieved a sale total of HK$491,395,100 / US$63,333,998, the second highest autumn auction total for the category since 2017 in Asia!

Retaining market leadership, the sale saw a remarkable 96% hammer against low estimate, with close to 80% sold by lot, and 35% of lots sold over high estimate.

Christie’s Hong Kong 20th/21st Century Art Sale Series

20th/21st Century Art Autumn Auction series achieved a combined sale total of HK$1.05B / US$136M, close to 90% sold by lot.

Christie’s Hong Kong presented a series of four live 20th and 21st Century Art auctions — the 20th/21st Century Art Evening Sale and the Post-Millennium Evening Sale, a Collab with Jay Chou, followed by the 20th Century Art Day Sale and 21st Century Art Day Sale – which achieved a combined sale total of HK$1.05B / US$136M. Christie’s vibrant sale curation and solid pricing strategy achieved a strong sell-through rate of close to 90% by lot, led by Sanyu’s masterpiece Femme nue sur un tapis (Nude on Tapestry) which achieved over HK$187,375,000 / US$24,164,442. All paintings by Yayoi Kusama were 100% sold, led by A Flower which sold for HK$78,125,000 / US$10,075,234, the second highest auction price for the artist. There was global participation from 34 countries across 6 continents. Millennials accounted for over 40% of new buyers overall, and 67% of Evening Sale new buyers.

Christie’s Hong Kong Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art Sale Series

Achieved Autumn market Leadershiip HK$524 Million. Highest Annual Sale total since 2018

Christie’s Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art department achieved a combined sale total of HK$912M / US$118M in 2023, achieved highest annual sale total since 2018. On 30 November, Christie’s Hong Kong presented a series of two live Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art and The Tianminlou Collection achieved a sale total of HK$524M / US$67.5M. Retaining market leadership, the sale saw a remarkable 138% hammer against low estimate, 46% of lots sold over high estimate, and 42% of new buyers were millennials.

The Tianminlou Collection – one of the world’s most renowned single-owner collections of Chinese porcelain – was presented in a dedicated auction at Christie’s Hong Kong, realising a total of HK$260,440,000 / US$33,550,532. The sale was close to 90% sold by lot. Amongst the Yuan, Ming, and Qing masterpieces offered, the top lot was a highly coveted, rare-to-market Yuan Dynasty blue and white meiping and cover, which realised HK$67,775,000 / US$8,736,896 and incited extremely competitive bidding.

Christie’s Hong Kong Chinese Paintings Sale Series

Chinese Paintings achieved HK$394M / US$50.7M Second Highest Hong Kong Autumn Sale Total Since 2018

Christie’s Hong Kong presented two live auctions Fine Chinese Modern and Contemporary Ink Paintings and Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy, which achieved a combined total of HK$393,982,000 (US$50,678,850), and contributed to the second highest Hong Kong autumn sale total for the category Asia since 2018. Amongst the masterpieces offered, the top lot was Wu Guanzhong’s A Hill City which realised HK$43,935,000 (US$5,665,989) and was sold to an online bidder. This season, Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy saw Millennials comprise 50% of new buyers, demonstrating the high desirability and value of these extraordinary Chinese paintings amongst the younger generation.
