The rarest of them all

The Himalaya Kelly with Diamonds holds the world record price for most valuable bag sold at auction. The Himalaya Kelly is considered the most desirable bag in the world. Hand-crafted and carefully dyed to resemble the snow-capped Himalayas, this item is notoriously difficult to come by. Due to the time-intensive dye process, Himalaya bags are made in extremely limited numbers, and even more so in the Kelly silhouette, making them the ultimate status symbol.

Signed by His Airness himself

Michael Jordan signed and possibly game worn original Air Jordan 1 ‘Chicago’ sneakers. Nike, 1985. Sold for $107,100 in The Greats on 8 December at Christie’s online
Michael Jordan signed and possibly game worn original Air Jordan 1 ‘Chicago’ sneakers. Nike, 1985. Sold for $107,100 in The Greats on 8 December at Christie’s online

The Air Jordan 1 is what started it all. When Peter Moore designed it in the 1980s, he could never have imagined how it would bring Nike from the court to the streets, essentially establishing sneaker culture with one silhouette. This pair signed by Michael Jordan was made between February and April 1985, the year the sneaker debuted. They feature light wear, meaning that they were possibly game worn. They offer a rare chance to get your feet into one of the earliest pairs that made Air Jordans one of the most popular shoes ever to grace the market.

Otherworldly elegance

The Arceau l’heure de la Lune playfully upends watch face expectations in a way that is uniquely Hermès. Instead of the main dial keeping twelve-hour time, two mother-of-pearl moons — showing the lunar phases in both the southern and northern hemispheres — orbit with two discs displaying the time and date. The result is visually stunning, demonstrating the technical mastery of Hermes's timepieces.

A Christmas Carol needs little introduction — it is one of the most classic tales of the holidays, penned with all the curiosities and humanity that made Dickens a household name. This first edition from 1843 is where it all started. With fully gilt edges and an original advertisement from the publisher at the end, this volume warrants a ‘bah humbug’ should it slip through your grasp.

This pair of skates is a crown uniquely fit for him: covered in ice.

Often around New Year’s, we resolve to be more mindful. The I Ching or Book of Changes addresses this through its hexagrams, each of which corresponds to a reflection on living. George Harrison’s copy of the book, inscribed ‘To Raviji—with much love and thanks’, was gifted to The Beatles’ spiritual and musical guru Ravi Shankar on Christmas 1966. It is a pristine entry point to Eastern spiritualism for lovers of music and meditation alike. Featuring a foreword by the psychoanalyst Carl Jung — who also appears on the cover of the band’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band — this classic text is a great way to kick start your New Year’s resolution.

Designed in 1982 by Bruce Kilgore, its instantly recognisable silhouette was the perfect subject for Abloh’s ‘refashioning’ — his trademark practice of combining sportswear and high fashion. This pair comes from the small collection made in collaboration with Louis Vuitton at their atelier in Fiesso d’Artico, Italy. Featuring Abloh’s signature quotation marks and embossed detailing around the shoe, it is undoubtedly one of the most expertly crafted sneakers in history.

‘Whatever you plan to do New Year’s Eve and other times, include me in,’ wrote Jack Kerouac in a letter his friend Ed White in 1947. A little further down the page he confesses that ‘Xmas in the country, in the South, is also appealing, and I don’t want to disappoint the Maw.’ His holiday dilemma is a familiar one. If Jack Kerouac can’t decide between spending time with his friends and going down South to not disappoint his mother, how can we?
