As the Co-Head of the Watches Department, I had the pleasure of presiding over our Patek Philippe 175 Anniversary Sale, which showcased some of the finest examples of watchmaking. This wristwatch was a personal favourite, for its technical quality and the circumstances of its commission.
One of the greatest pleasures of a watch is how seamlessly it can fit into the wearer’s habits and life. This watch was specially commissioned in 1939 for William E. Boeing, the aviation pioneer, and is a very early example of the split-seconds mechanism.
Mr Boeing was a horse racing enthusiast and this complication would have allowed him to time two events simultaneously. As you see here, the result is one of the most beautiful and technologically advanced watches of its time.
