Hong Kong Chinese Paintings sales total HK$590 million / US$76 million

Following the success of our Hong Kong Spring auctions, we are now inviting consignments to our upcoming auctions of Chinese Paintings in November 2016

Held from 29-31 May, Christie’s Hong Kong sales of Chinese Paintings realised a combined total of HK$590,436,500 / US$76,392,255. Auctions included Chinese Contemporary Ink, Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy, and Fine Chinese Modern paintings, with an additional six lots offered in 30 Years: The Sale, celebrating Christie’s 30th anniversary in Asia.

Strong results were seen across categories, with highlights of 30 Years: The Sale including Zhang Daqian’s Summer on California Mountain, which realised HK$39,320,000/ US$5,087,328, and Li Keran’s Twin Waterfalls, sold for HK$24,200,000 / US$3,131,061.

Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy was led by Zhang Ruo’ai’s Autumn Landscape, which realised HK$18,040,000 / US$2,334,064, far exceeding its high estimate to become the sale’s top lot.

Attracting 245 buyers from 10 countries, Fine Chinese Modern Paintings was led by Zhang Daqian’s Guanyin in Early Tang Style, sold for HK$ 50,520,000/ US$ 6,534,105.

With 90% sold by value, Chinese Contemporary Ink was led by Li Huayi’s Northern Peaks — the sale’s top lot, which realised HK$4,240,000 / US$548,583.

The strength of these results indicates the continued demand for high-quality works in this category, with exceptional provenance. We are currently welcoming consignments for our auctions of Chinese Paintings in November 2016.
