The halls of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre have been alive with the sound of music over the last couple of days. And this wasn’t only Elton John, who performed here on Tuesday evening, but musicians and collectors from all over Asia trying out the four Stradivari violins, the three Guarneri del Gesù violins and the one Stradivari ‘cello that make up the once in a lifetime selling exhibition The Art of Music.
Stradivari, Muir-MacKenzie, 1694
First exhibited in Shanghai during the sale week there, we at Christie’s are proud to showcase this exceptional collection of instruments from the all-time stars of the instrument making world, Antonio Stradivari and Giuseppe Bartolomeo Guarneri, known as del Gesù. Nothing like this has been done before in Asia. And the instruments were not the only stars. In collaboration with Premier Performance of Hong Kong, there was an intimate recital and discussion about the instruments at the Liang Yi Museum, given by the duo Igor Yuzefovich, who played three of the violins to contrast them, and Richard Bamping, who played the ex du Pré ‘cello.
Jing Wang, Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Steinway pianist Dr Vivian Cheng Wai performed in the James Christie room at the Convention Centre.
Two days later in the James Christie room at the Convention Centre, we were treated to a scintillating performance by Jing Wang, Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Steinway pianist Dr Vivian Cheng Wai. Steinway and Tom Lee Music supported this great evening. There will also be an art forum today, featuring a live performance again by Jing Wang and Cheng Wai, for more audiences to experience the magic of these legendary instruments. The exhibition continues at Christie’s through Sunday and explores why these instruments have been revered by players for 300 years and the place of the violin in art and culture.
