For over 250 years, Christie's has been at the centre of the art world, working across every imaginable category. Throughout our long history, we have expanded our expertise in Asian art and continue to lead the field today.
In May 2018, we achieved our highest ever Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art Evening Sale total of over HK$1 billion, driven by a robust appetite for masterpieces. The top lot of the sale was Zao Wou-Ki's 14.12.59, which more than doubled its high estimate, fetching HK$176 million / US$22.63 million.
The strong global demand for Asian art was underpinned by the sale of The Taber Family Tianqiuping from Philbrook Museum of Art, which realised HK$130.6 million / US$16.7 million. The intense bidding for the extraordinary Qianlong vase, the highlight of our Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art offered this season, demonstrates keen interest in the market for high quality, rare properties with exceptional provenance.
Collectors also pursued our classical, modern and contemporary ink Chinese paintings, in which almost half of the paintings sold realised prices over its high estimate. Highlights by masters like Zhang Daqian, Fu Baoshi and Liu Kuo-sung achieved a total of HK$524 million / US$67 million at the Spring Auctions in Hong Kong.
These exceptional results bear testament to the depth of our client base and our innovative curation, epitomising the global nature of collecting Asian art today.
We are now inviting consignments to our Autumn sales. Please contact us to arrange an appointment for a complimentary and confidential valuation.
