All things jade

Exquisite zoomorphic carvings, opulent gem-set hilts and magnificent jade jewellery attest to the importance of this prized material within Indian imperial ateliers. The Mughal appreciation of jade continued from their Timurid forebears but was combined with other luxurious materials such as rock crystal, rubies, diamonds and emeralds to situate it firmly within the Mughal taste. The masterpieces in Mughal jade featured in this collection are led by a jade cup with an ibex so delicately carved that the Chinese Emperor Qianlong composed a poem in its honour. The outstanding craftsmanship in jade is further displayed by a rare surviving jade huqqa base with intricate gem-set floral ornamentation and a crutch handle carved in the form of the ibex with exquisite detail.
