Virtual tour: Collection Jacqueline Matisse Monnier

From 7 April to 13 April, our galleries display a selection of 78 works by the most renowned artists of the 20th century. In addition to the two Océanie, la mer et Océanie, le ciel pieces by Henri Matisse, Jacqueline’s grandfather, works by Diego and Alberto Giacometti will be exhibited, as well as a wonderful painted bronze Petit buste d’homme by Alberto and a patinated bronze Porte-manteau au hibou by Diego.

Immerse yourself in the fascinating family history that shaped the collection. Granddaughter of the painter Henri Matisse, Jacqueline (known as Jackie) Matisse was the daughter of Henri’s son Pierre Matisse, a leading New York gallery owner, and his wife Alexina Teeny Matisse, who later married Marcel Duchamp. This creative universe reveals the genuine friendships and the intimate links between the family and some of the most prominent artists of their time. For instance, the auction includes the very first blue hippopotamus by François-Xavier Lalanne, imagined for Teeny Matisse, which led to the iconic models of Lalane’s bathtubs. The auction also gathers art pieces created by Miró (Jackie's godfather), Riopelle, Klein, Man Ray, Niki de Saint Phalle, Dubuffet, Hantaï... and, of course, Henri Matisse.
