Highlights from The Pavilion Sale

This April, Christie’s presents The Pavilion Sale, featuring a wide array of Chinese artworks based on mythical creatures

Mythical creatures have a long history in Chinese culture, and have been a recurring theme in artistic creation.

Among the mythical creatures offered in The Pavilion Sale are Taotie, a savage whose gluttony was such that it was prepared to eat its own body; Xiezhi, known as the ‘animal of truth’; Luduan, the guardian of enlightened rulers; Suanni, a fearless lion; and Dragon Fish, the guardian of gateways, which originated in Hindu mythology.

Further sale highlights include a ‘Mythical Animals and Grapes’ bronze mirror from the Tang dynasty, which reflects the power that mythical creatures held among ancient people, and the role they played in life and art.
