David Cox était un maître dans la représentation de l’atmosphère et des effets de la nature. (1783–1859) Ce peintre paysagiste anglais influent a considérablement contribué au développement de l’aquarelle au XIXe siècle. Né en 1783 à Birmingham, Cox a commencé sa carrière artistique sous la tutelle de l’artiste Joseph Barber. À l’âge de 15 ans environ, Cox a commencé un apprentissage auprès d’Albert Fielder, miniaturiste et peintre de tabatières. Ces premières expériences ont imprégné Cox d’un sens aigu de la couleur, du détail et de la composition.
En 1804, Cox s’est installé à Londres et a effectué le premier de ses nombreux voyages au Pays de Galles l’année suivante. Au cours de cette année-là, l’artiste a réalisé ses premières aquarelles et s’est rapidement fait connaître pour sa capacité à saisir les effets éphémères de la lumière et des conditions météorologiques. Épris des côtes et de la campagne anglaises, Cox a effectué de nombreux voyages de croquis dans les Home Counties, le nord du Pays de Galles, le Yorkshire, le Derbyshire et le Devon tout au long de sa vie.
Cox fut élu membre de la Society of Painters in Water Colours en 1813. Cette adhésion lui offrit une tribune pour exposer son œuvre et nouer des liens avec ses contemporains. Ses peintures de cette période représentent souvent la campagne anglaise, en capturant la beauté sereine et les humeurs changeantes avec une sensibilité et un talent remarquables.
Dès le milieu ou la fin des années 1830, Cox avait exprimé son intention de peindre à l’huile. Malgré son vif intérêt et sa production, l'hostilité entre la Society of Painters in Water Colours et la Royal Academy a rendu difficile pour Cox d'être reconnu dans le domaine de l'huile, en plus de son succès en aquarelle à Londres. Dans les années 1840, Cox était considéré comme l'une des figures de proue du style aquarelliste paysager anglais de la première moitié du XIXe siècle, aux côtés de Peter De Wint et Copley Fielding.
Tout au long de sa carrière, Cox a conservé un lien étroit avec sa ville natale de Birmingham, et il y retournait fréquemment pour peindre. Ses sujets de prédilection comprenaient les montagnes galloises, les Midlands anglais et les paysages côtiers, qu’il représentait avec une compréhension intime de leurs caractéristiques uniques. Ses œuvres de la fin de sa carrière illustrent les qualités « impressionnistes » du médium de l’aquarelle.
Cox était également un enseignant dévoué, influençant toute une génération d’artistes par ses écrits et son enseignement. David Cox est décédé en 1859, à l’âge de 76 ans. Aujourd’hui, ses œuvres font partie des collections du Louvre à Paris, du British Museum à Londres, du Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery et bien d’autres encore.
