David Teniers the Younger

David Teniers le Jeune était un artiste flamand du XVIIe siècle qui peignait à l’époque baroque, surtout connu pour ses scènes de genre représentant la vie des paysans et des tavernes. L’artiste était célèbre pour ses scènes simples et quotidiennes, contrairement à ses contemporains — tels que Rembrandt van Rijn et Peter Paul Rubens — qui étaient connus pour leurs peintures religieuses et historiques.

Né à Anvers en 1610, Teniers a d'abord étudié la peinture auprès de son père, David Teniers l'Ancien. L'influence du peintre de genre Adriaen Brouwer est perceptible dans les premières œuvres de Teniers, bien que l'artiste y ait apporté sa propre touche chaleureuse, humoristique et observatrice.

Au début des années 1630, Teniers était devenu maître au sein de la guilde de Saint-Luc à Anvers. En 1637, l’artiste épousa Anna Brueghel, fille du peintre Jan Brueghel l’Ancien. Ce mariage élargit les cercles artistiques de Teniers et, au cours de la décennie suivante, sa réputation ne cessa de grandir. Il devint surtout connu pour ses représentations vivantes de la vie paysanne, des scènes de taverne et des fêtes de village. Dans des œuvres telles que La Fête villageoise (vers 1646), Teniers parvient à équilibrer une atmosphère évocatrice et une galerie de personnages avec des détails de nature morte d’une grande précision.

L’artiste s’installa à Bruxelles en 1651 pour occuper les fonctions de peintre de cour et de conservateur auprès de l’archiduc Léopold Guillaume, gouverneur des Pays-Bas méridionaux. À ce titre, il réalisa des portraits illustrant la vaste collection d’art de Guillaume, comme L’archiduc Léopold Guillaume dans sa galerie à Bruxelles (vers 1651). Au cours de cette période, Teniers créa également le Theatrum Pictorium (ou Théâtre de la peinture), qui fut le premier catalogue imprimé et illustré d’une importante collection de peintures. Publié en 1660, ce catalogue reproduisait 243 œuvres de la collection de l’archiduc.

Teniers est mort en 1690, mais son influence s’est prolongée bien au-delà de cette date : son œuvre a influencé le développement de la peinture de genre nordique et de l’art français du XVIIIe siècle. L’artiste a également contribué à la création de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts d’Anvers, l’une des premières écoles d’art au monde, qui existe encore aujourd’hui.
