Membre de la deuxième génération des préraphaélites, le peintre et designer anglais Sir Edward Burne-Jones s’efforça de refléter les idéaux de la fin du XIXe siècle. Né en 1833 à Birmingham, Burne-Jones avait initialement l’intention de se lancer dans une carrière ecclésiastique et commença des études de théologie à l’université d’Oxford. C’est là qu’il rencontra William Morris. Les deux hommes nouèrent une amitié qui dura toute leur vie, s’influençant mutuellement de manière considérable dans leur travail et créant la société de textiles Morris & Co., qui existe encore aujourd’hui.
C’est également à Oxford que Burne-Jones et Morris ont collaboré avec le cofondateur de la Confrérie préraphaélite, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, sur les fresques murales de l’Oxford Union à la fin des années 1850. Burne-Jones allait ensuite définir l’orientation du mouvement au cours des décennies suivantes, lorsque celui-ci devint plus décoratif et transporta les spectateurs dans un univers médiéval peuplé de chevaliers arthuriens et de jeunes filles aux cheveux auburn.
Tout comme Morris, Burne-Jones cherchait à réenchanter un monde qu’il estimait avoir été souillé physiquement par la révolution industrielle et moralement par le capitalisme effréné de l’Empire britannique. Il pensait que le rôle de l’art, loin de capturer l’existence moderne, était d’offrir une échappatoire à celle-ci.
Burne-Jones est réputé pour son style éthéré et romantique, qui s’inspirait souvent de thèmes médiévaux et mythologiques. Une grande partie de l’œuvre de Burne-Jones fait le pont entre les idéologies des mouvements symboliste et esthétique. Elle est symboliste dans la mesure où la mise en scène de ses tableaux se délecte de l’ambiguïté, sans explication claire du contexte narratif ou de l’état émotionnel de ses sujets. En même temps, l’absence de sujet spécifique confère une dimension esthétique à ses tableaux.
L’une de ses œuvres remarquables, Love Among the Ruins (1873), illustre sa vision romantique et mélancolique, saluée par la critique comme « l’une des créations les plus parfaites et les plus belles du maître ». En 2013, cette aquarelle s’est vendue chez Christie’s Londres pour 14 845 875 £, établissant un record mondial aux enchères pour l’artiste et pour une œuvre préraphaélite.
Burne-Jones a servi de trait d’union entre la Confrérie et la troisième génération de préraphaélites, notamment Thomas Matthews Rooke, Byam Shaw et John William Waterhouse, sur les œuvres desquels il a exercé une influence plus ou moins grande.
