Tim Schmelcher
International Director | Prints & Multiples
With these and many successful various-owner sales since 2007, Tim has helped Christie’s set countless records for Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya and many other printmakers of the 15th to the 20th century, including the highest price for an old master print at auction: Rembrandt’s Arnout Tholinx, Inspector, sold for GBP 3,100,000 in the final Josefowitz sale in December 2025.
Other successes include the sale of Edvard Munch’s Young Woman on the Beach for £2,130,000 (London, in March 2013), Picasso’s Repas Frugal for US$ 4,648,000 (New York, May 2023) and Albrecht Dürer’s Melencholia I for US$ 882,000 (Exceptional Impressions: The Alan and Marianne Schwartz Collection, New York, October 2024), as well as some very significant private sales.
Tim speaks English, German, and French and holds an M.A. in Art History. Based in London, he maintains regular contact with collectors and institutions in Europe and in North America.
