This work will be included in the forthcoming Van Rysselberghe catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Olivier Bertrand.

The sitter of the present work, Dr. Jean Keller, was the son of the collector Dr. Théodore Keller, a close friend of the artist who commissioned this work. Van Rysselberghe depicts the younger Keller in front of works from his family’s collection, including Paul Gauguin’s Le Christ vert (now in the collection of the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique) and Auguste Rodin’s Le Minotaure.
