Situated in the West Bank, within the rugged terrain of the Wadi Qelt gorge, the Monastery of St George presents a striking visual subject. As Richard Cork (1987) observes, Bomberg appears to have worked independently, rather than under formal commission, during his sojourn at this site - a circumstance Cork interprets as conducive to a heightened sense of artistic freedom and vitality. In this context, Bomberg engages the monastery and its craggy environs with renewed expressive energy. His application of thick impasto evokes the harsh intensity of the sun-scorched landscape, with brushstrokes that convey the dense, intractable weight of heat; their coarseness mirrors the unyielding character of the terrain itself. The restrained palette further reinforces the bleached stillness of the desert, with colours subdued beneath an oppressive, arid light, as though the landscape has been parched by relentless solar exposure.
