En marqueterie de bois de violette en pointe de diamants et croisillons, ornementation de bronze ciselé et doré, la corniche à doucine ceinte d'une lingotière et ornée d'un cartouche rocaille ajouré centré d'une graine éclatée, ouvrant par deux portes vitrées encadrées d'une frise ajourée de coquilles, ornées aux angles d'agrafes feuillagées, les montants arrondis appliqués de cartouches foliés ajourés et de chutes de fleurs, reposant sur une plinthe centrée d'un tablier à décor de volutes feuillagées, les petits pieds droits appliqués de coquilles, chacune marquetée 'HEDOVIN' sur la porte intérieure droite

A PAIR OF LOUIS XV ORMOLU-MOUNTED KINGWOOD MARQUETRY LOW BOOKCASES, BY JEAN-BAPTISTE HEDOUIN, CIRCA 1730-1735
True masterpieces of ébénisterie (cabinet-making), these low bookcases are signed 'Hédouin' within a marquetry cartouche (fig. 1) and are distinguished by the elegant use of diamond-point parquetry veneer, which creates a striking sense of relief across their surfaces. This subtle play of depth is complemented by the richly chased and gilt-bronze mounts. The shaped upper structures (doucines) are ornamented with projecting bursting-seed motifs, while the doors are framed by pierced gilt-bronze galleries with alternating floral ornaments. Together, these features make the pair a remarkable demonstration of technical virtuosity. They were almost certainly executed as a special commission, as suggested by the imposing shaped tops surmounting each bookcase, evidently conceived to display a collection of bronzes or porcelain.
JEAN-BAPTISTE I HÉDOUIN, THE ELDER
Paradoxically, relatively little is known about this cabinet-maker. Two ébénistes bearing the name Jean-Baptiste Hédouin, an uncle and his nephew, were established in the rue Traversière in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. While the nephew is described simply as an ébéniste in his marriage contract of 1750, the elder Hédouin, who appears there as a witness, is designated maître ébéniste. The date of 1738 traditionally given by the historian François de Salverte as the year of his maîtrise therefore applies to Jean-Baptiste I Hédouin.
The Hédouin family belonged to a distinguished circle of Parisian cabinet-makers. Mathieu Criaerd (1689-1776), for example, was among the witnesses at the marriage of Jean-Baptiste II Hédouin's daughter in 1758. Hédouin also appears among the subcontractors employed by Pierre IV Migeon (1696-1758), being recorded in the latter's Livre des Ouvriers in 1746, and later worked for the marchand-ébéniste Genty, whose bankruptcy proceedings of 1762 likewise mention him. The stylistic dating of these low bookcases to circa 1730-35, together with the presence of a marquetry signature rather than a stamped maker's mark (estampille), supports their attribution to Jean-Baptiste I Hédouin, executed before he obtained his maîtrise in 1738.
