A crab holding a stalk of grain is an auspicious symbol for a harmonious marriage year after year. In Chinese, ‘crab’ is pronounced xie 蟹, a homophone for ‘harmony' 諧. Similarly, 'ear of grain' or sui 穗 is homophonous with year 歲.
