Tsuki no misaki (Moon-viewing point)

Yatsuyama Hill, located near Shinagawa Station, was renowned as a popular moon-viewing spot during the Edo period. The windows of the grand banquet room of a teahouse serve as a frame, offering a magnificent view of Edo Bay, with the full moon illuminating the autumn night sky and geese flying across the scene. Hiroshige suggests that the evening’s banquet has come to an end: the room is now empty, with only a female attendant remaining to clear away after the guests. On the left, the shoji sliding door reveals the silhouette of a courtesan, adding an intriguing sense of narrative and intimacy to the scene.
