Christie's Paris - 24 October 2011

A Poetic Eye

A visionary art collection is offered at Christie’s Paris this month, presenting an exciting opportunity to acquire works from the collection of poet, novelist and essayist, André Pieyre de Mandiargues. Saturating his literature with a surreal and dark eroticism, André Pieyre de Mandiargues became closely associated with the Surrealist group – at the time led by André Breton – following the publication of his debut novel, During the Dark, in 1943. Through his relationship with the movement he became acquainted with many important artists who were active in the Parisian circle, including Miró, Léger, and most notably Leónor Fini. Fini was a good friend and the subject of Pieyre de Mandiargues' writing on leading artists of the day, which was later compiled into the Belvédère series. He was married to the Italian painter Bona Tibertelli de Pisis, the niece of the Italian metaphysical painter Filippo de Pisis, whose work is represented in this sale with 35 paintings, their estimates ranging from €800 to €35,000. Also included in the collection is a fine selection of photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, jewels, books and old master paintings.
