Adopting Turkish textiles to upholster European furniture, importing Chinese opium beds for Italian siestas, painting Egyptian traditions to adorn German walls… the encounter of western and eastern cultures is evident in art more than anywhere else. As we see in the works of the German Orientalist, A. Pohl, and the famous Victorian artist, Frederick Goodall, the fascination with foreign lands and indigenous civilisations has led explorers, thinkers and artists alike, to travel far and wide to discover and study the unknown. This selection of works invites us to infuse some ethnic styles into our homes and encourage the cross-fertilisation of cultures and the wonderful treasures it can lead to.
