Viewing and Contact

Drawn primarily from a number of important private collections, such as the Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Norman Granz and The Cohen Collection, Christie's fall sale features an exquisite group of works by Cézanne, Gauguin, Léger, Modigliani, Monet, Picasso, and other renowned masters.

The centerpiece of the sale is a late example of Monet's Nymphéas series, Le bassin aux nymphéas, painted 1917-1919 and like the other paintings created at the lily-pond behind Monet's house at Giverny.

Of special interest is an elegant and sophisticated portrait of an anonymous sitter, La robe noire, by Modigliani. This 1918 masterpiece shows all the characteristic traits of the artist's distinctive figural type that he adopted after 1916, such as the elongated oval face and the graceful neck. Other highlights include Pablo Picasso's bronze, La guenon et son petit, conceived in Vaillauris in October 1951, at a time when Picasso had become deeply engrossed in domestic life with Françoise GiLot and their two children, son Claude and daughter Paloma. The sculpture is an assemblage of simple daily elements such as a Panhard car that became the top of the monkey's head with its windshield framing the eyes. Another car, a Renault, is put upside down to show its trunk and rear fender as the sculpture's lower jaw. Read more about this fascinating work.
