Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) è stato un pittore e poeta britannico, nonché membro fondatore della Confraternita dei Preraffaelliti, la cui opera ha contribuito a ridefinire le ambizioni estetiche e spirituali dell’arte vittoriana. Nato a Londra da un letterato italiano emigrato e cresciuto in un ambiente intellettualmente ricco, Rossetti fu profondamente influenzato fin da giovane dalla letteratura medievale, dall’arte rinascimentale e dalla poesia romantica. Studiò alle Royal Academy Schools e in seguito sotto la guida di Ford Madox Brown, ma ben presto rifiutò le convenzioni accademiche a favore di uno stile più emotivo, simbolico e ricco di dettagli.
Nel 1848, Rossetti fondò la Confraternita dei Preraffaelliti insieme a William Holman Hunt e John Everett Millais. Uniti dal desiderio di tornare alla sincerità e alla ricchezza di dettagli della pittura del primo Rinascimento, il gruppo promosse il realismo, il simbolismo complesso e le fonti letterarie. Le prime opere di Rossetti, come L’infanzia della Vergine Maria (1849), combinavano temi religiosi con un naturalismo intricato e un’iconografia elaborata.
A partire dagli anni ’60 dell’Ottocento, Rossetti sviluppò un’estetica più sensuale e introspettiva, raffigurando spesso figure femminili idealizzate tratte dal mito, dall’allegoria e dalla letteratura. Questi ritratti — molti dei quali raffiguravano la sua musa Elizabeth Siddal e, in seguito, Jane Morris — enfatizzavano l’atmosfera, il colore e la profondità psicologica, riflettendo un orientamento verso il Movimento Estetico. I suoi dipinti più noti di questo periodo, tra cui Beata Beatrix (1864–70 circa) e Proserpine (1874), sono celebri per la loro atmosfera intensa e il simbolismo stratificato.
Poeta prolifico oltre che pittore, i due talenti di Rossetti si intrecciavano spesso, tanto che molti dei suoi dipinti erano accompagnati da versi. La sua raccolta Poems (1870) e la sequenza di sonetti The House of Life esploravano temi quali l’amore, la perdita e la creazione artistica, consolidando ulteriormente il suo status di figura di spicco dell’arte e della letteratura britannica del XIX secolo.
L’influenza di Rossetti si estese oltre la sua vita, plasmando i movimenti simbolista ed estetico in tutta Europa. Le sue opere sono conservate in importanti istituzioni, tra cui la Tate Britain, l’Ashmolean Museum e il Delaware Art Museum.
