Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) è considerato uno dei principali pittori veneziani del XVIII secolo, celebre per i suoi suggestivi e luminosi vedute di Venezia. Nato a Venezia nel 1712, era il più giovane di una famiglia di pittori e si formò nella bottega del padre e del fratello maggiore, assimilando inizialmente le tradizioni decorative e architettoniche della pittura veneziana prima di sviluppare uno stile personale caratterizzato da una pennellata fluida e da effetti atmosferici. L’opera di Guardi cattura la vita quotidiana, l’architettura e i canali di Venezia con un delicato equilibrio tra realismo e interpretazione poetica, offrendo una visione intima della città al culmine della sua vivacità culturale.
A differenza del suo contemporaneo Canaletto, le cui vedute si distinguono per la precisione del disegno, l’approccio di Guardi era più impressionista, privilegiando una tavolozza più tenue e una pennellata pittorica che infondeva movimento e atmosfera alle scene. I suoi paesaggi urbani — che spaziano dalle piazze affollate ai canali tranquilli — combinano l’accuratezza topografica con un senso di luce e condizioni meteorologiche fugaci, creando immagini che sono al tempo stesso documentarie ed evocative. Le composizioni di Guardi includono spesso figure e festeggiamenti, conferendo una qualità narrativa alle sue rappresentazioni della vita pubblica e sociale di Venezia.
Guardi rimase attivo a Venezia per tutta la sua carriera, realizzando opere per collezionisti, palazzi e istituzioni in tutta Europa. Sebbene ricevesse commissioni da mecenati in Inghilterra, Austria e Russia, i suoi dipinti erano particolarmente apprezzati per la loro atmosfera tipicamente veneziana e il loro fascino intimo. Oggi, le vedute di Guardi sono apprezzate per la combinazione di abilità tecnica, pennellata espressiva e visione storica, offrendo sia piacere estetico sia una finestra sulla Venezia del XVIII secolo.
