Jack Butler Yeats è stato uno dei più importanti pittori irlandesi del XX secolo. Il suo stile lirico ha saputo cogliere la vita quotidiana in Irlanda, tra cui la folla dei mercati, i pescatori sulle coste e i frequentatori dei pub di Dublino.
Nato nel 1871, era il fratello minore del poeta William Butler Yeats e figlio del ritrattista John Butler Yeats e di Susan Yeats. Sebbene fosse nato a Londra, l’artista crebbe nella casa dei nonni a Sligo, nell’Irlanda occidentale, e questo paesaggio influenzò in seguito il suo stile artistico.
Inizialmente, Yeats lavorò come illustratore per giornali e riviste prima di passare alla pittura a olio all’inizio del XX secolo. I dipinti dell’artista di questo periodo adottarono l’approccio realista delle sue precedenti opere illustrative, con contorni marcati, forme chiare e una tavolozza dai toni tenui.
Lo stile artistico di Yeats divenne in seguito più espressionista, orientando le sue opere a cogliere lo spirito dell’Irlanda piuttosto che i singoli personaggi. Con questo cambiamento stilistico, Yeats iniziò a utilizzare colori vivaci e ampie pennellate nelle sue opere. Dipinti come The Liffey Swim (1923) mettevano in evidenza l’attenzione dell’artista nel catturare l’atmosfera e l’energia di una scena, immergendo lo spettatore all’interno dell’opera d’arte.
Yeats documentò la guerra civile irlandese attraverso i suoi dipinti; The Funeral of Harry Boland (1922) e Communicating with Prisoners (c. 1924) raffigurano Dublino durante quel periodo. Sebbene molte delle opere di Yeats ritraessero eventi della vita reale, anche la memoria e il misticismo occupavano un posto di rilievo nelle sue opere — l’artista una volta osservò: «Nessuno crea. L’artista assembla ricordi».
Yeats e sua moglie, Mary Cottenham Yeats, furono figure influenti nel panorama artistico e letterario irlandese. Insieme, organizzavano salotti il giovedì pomeriggio nel loro appartamento a Dublino. Fu proprio in uno di quei salotti che Yeats incontrò lo scrittore Samuel Beckett — a proposito dei dipinti della serie «half-memory» dell’artista, Beckett disse: «Di’ a Jack Yeats che ha acceso un fuoco che si diffonderà».
Yeats era anche lui stesso uno scrittore e nel corso della sua vita pubblicò diversi romanzi, opere teatrali e raccolte di poesie. L’artista morì nel 1957, lasciando in eredità la sua fama di uno degli artisti più celebri d’Irlanda. Le sue opere sono conservate in numerose collezioni, tra cui la National Gallery of Ireland, la Hugh Lane Gallery e l’Irish Museum of Modern Art.
