James McNeill Whistler

James McNeill Whistler fu un artista americano famoso per i dipinti, le incisioni e i disegni realizzati in Europa nella seconda metà del XIX secolo. Tra questi spiccano le scene notturne vagamente evocative note come i suoi «Notturni»; i suoi ritratti; e il dipinto della sua amante Joanna Hiffernan del 1862, Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl.

Whistler nacque nella città di Lowell, nel Massachusetts, nel 1834. Verso la fine dell’adolescenza si iscrisse all’Accademia Militare degli Stati Uniti a West Point. All’inizio dei vent’anni, tuttavia, partì per Parigi, deciso a diventare un artista.

Si formò nell’atelier di Charles Gleyre e divenne ben presto amico di Gustave Courbet, la cui opera in stile realista esercitò su di lui una precoce influenza. Nel 1859 Whistler si trasferì a Londra e, per gran parte del resto della sua carriera, fungé da tramite di idee artistiche tra le capitali britannica e francese. «Sinfonia in bianco, n. 1: La ragazza in bianco», ad esempio, deve molto ai preraffaelliti.

Quel dipinto fece scalpore sia a Londra che a Parigi — in parte perché il pubblico lo associava al romanzo giallo di grande successo pubblicato di recente da Wilkie Collins, La donna in bianco.

Negli anni ’60 dell’Ottocento, sotto la crescente influenza del giapponismo, Whistler iniziò a realizzare paesaggi in cui voltò le spalle alla trascrizione naturalistica. Optò invece per soggetti allusivi, superfici piatte e decorative e sottili armonie tonali. È in questa stessa ottica che si possono considerare le sue scene londinesi della serie Nocturne del decennio successivo. Whistler fu anche un appassionato incisore per tutta la sua carriera.

Tra le sue opere più note in questo campo vi è una serie di 50 incisioni su rame dedicate a Venezia, realizzate nel corso di un periodo di 14 mesi trascorso nella città tra il 1879 e il 1880.

Whistler vedeva notevoli parallelismi tra arte e musica e amava dare ai suoi dipinti titoli musicali. Ciò si estendeva persino ai ritratti — come quello di sua madre, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, che oggi si trova al Musée d’Orsay di Parigi.

Nel 1898 fu nominato primo presidente della Società Internazionale degli Scultori, Pittori e Incisori. Whistler morì cinque anni dopo, all’età di 69 anni.

Nel 2000, il suo dipinto Harmony in Grey, Chelsea in Ice fu venduto da Christie’s per 2.866.000 dollari, stabilendo il record del prezzo più alto mai pagato all’asta per un’opera di Whistler.
