Born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany in 1961, Grosse studied at Kunstakademie Münster & Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. She rose to prominence in the late 1990s, gaining widespread international acclaim for her immersive installations and large-scale studio canvases. To create these works, she often employs an industrial compressed-air spray gun to propel brilliant acrylic pigments across architectural structures, raw landforms, stretched canvases and everyday objects.
Throughout her practice, Grosse has sought to dismantle traditional hierarchies of subject, background and frame. While drawing upon modernist traditions of Abstract Expressionism and Renaissance fresco painting, her work subverts traditional painterly constraints by treating colour as an autonomous force that envelops the viewer, challenging conventional perceptions of space and form.
Landmark projects and exhibitions include her acclaimed installation Untitled Trumpet for the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), Rockaway! commissioned by MoMA PS1 at Fort Tilden (2016), her massive site-specific takeover It Wasn't Us at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2020) and the major touring retrospective Studio Paintings 1988–2022, hosted by the Kemper Art Museum, Kunstmuseum Bern and Kunstmuseum Bonn. Her work is held in prestigious permanent collections worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Albertina in Vienna and the Kunsthaus Zürich.
