Olga Albizu was a pioneering Puerto Rican abstract painter whose vibrant, gestural compositions established her as a leading figure of post-war Latin American abstraction.

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1924, Albizu studied under Spanish painter Esteban Vicente at the University of Puerto Rico before continuing her training in New York. There, she worked with influential artists including Hans Hofmann, whose emphasis on colour, spatial tension and painterly expression profoundly shaped her artistic practice.

Working primarily in oil on canvas, Albizu developed a distinctive style characterised by dynamic brushwork, luminous colour and rhythmic compositions that balanced spontaneity with careful structure. While informed by the principles of Abstract Expressionism, her paintings possess a lyrical quality rooted in movement and light, often evoking music through their layered, improvisational arrangements of line and colour. Rather than depicting the visible world, Albizu explored emotion and perception, as seen in works such as Radiante (1967), where bold passages of yellow, orange and black create a vivid sense of movement and intensity.

From the 1950s onwards, Albizu exhibited widely across Puerto Rico and the United States, gaining recognition for her bold approach to non-representational painting. During the 1960s, she achieved wider visibility through album cover commissions for Verve and RCA Victor, creating striking covers for jazz musicians including Stan Getz and João Gilberto. These collaborations reflected the close affinity between her visual language and the improvisational energy of modern jazz. She died in New York in 2005.

Today, Albizu is recognised as one of the foremost women of American Abstract Expressionism, with her practice bridging the artistic cultures of Puerto Rico and New York while expanding the possibilities of post-war painting. Reflecting her career, the artist once said, ‘A painter becomes a painter because he feels the urge to paint, not to become a famous artist.’
