Considerato il più grande artista dell’Età dell’Oro olandese, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn rivoluzionò la pittura con una padronanza eccezionale della luce, dell’ombra e della pennellata, imprimendo alle sue scene e ai suoi soggetti un realismo senza compromessi e un’ambiziosa intensità psicologica.
Nato a Leida nel 1606, Rembrandt si affermò dopo il 1631 nel fiorente porto di Amsterdam, dipingendo ritratti, scene bibliche, paesaggi e studi di animali per una classe mercantile di recente formazione. Sebbene non si fosse mai recato all’estero, la sua arte era influenzata dal pittore barocco italiano Caravaggio, il cui uso innovativo del chiaroscuro, sviluppatosi all’inizio del secolo, era recentemente giunto in Olanda grazie agli artisti olandesi itineranti Hendrick ter Brugghen, Gerrit van Honthorst e Dirck van Baburen.
In seguito alla Riforma protestante di Amsterdam del 1578, le commissioni da parte della Chiesa si esaurirono; Rembrandt dovette quindi rivolgersi agli enti civici in cerca di mecenatismo. Una commissione ricevuta intorno al 1639 portò alla realizzazione del suo dipinto più famoso: un enorme e dinamico ritratto di gruppo raffigurante una milizia locale che emerge da un vicolo buio, intitolato La ronda di notte (1642, Rijksmuseum).
Circa 50 dei circa 300 dipinti di Rembrandt erano autoritratti, che abbracciano l’intera durata della sua carriera quarantennale. Egli elevò questo mezzo espressivo a nuovi livelli di autobiografia, adottando espressioni facciali, oggetti di scena e costumi non convenzionali per trasmettere i suoi stati d’animo in continuo mutamento. Nel corso del tempo sviluppò anche una tecnica a impasto, applicando spessi strati di pittura con pennellate di spatola o con le setole del pennello per creare una superficie tattile del suo volto invecchiato, rubicondo e rugoso.
Rembrandt fu anche un prolifico incisore. Estremamente sperimentale nella varietà dei tratti e nelle qualità tonali del mezzo, realizzò circa 300 incisioni e puntesecche, che circolarono ampiamente in Europa durante la sua vita e sono ancora oggi considerate un punto di riferimento per la maestria in questo campo.
Nonostante il successo, Rembrandt sperperò la sua fortuna, spendendo compulsivamente in arte e oggetti d’antiquariato. Nel 1656 dichiarò bancarotta e cedette i propri beni nel tentativo di saldare i debiti. Nel 1669, all’età di 63 anni, morì senza un soldo e fu sepolto in una tomba senza nome. Oggi, la sua eredità perdura. Nel 2009 Christie’s ha venduto il Ritratto di un uomo con le braccia sui fianchi di Rembrandt per 20.201.250 sterline, stabilendo un record mondiale d’asta per l’artista.
