William Blake (1757-1827) fu un poeta, pittore e incisore inglese visionario, ampiamente considerato una delle figure più influenti nella storia della letteratura e dell’arte. Nato a Londra, figlio di un calzolaio, fu in gran parte autodidatta. La sua famiglia era politicamente radicale e religiosamente non conformista, caratteristiche che avrebbero influenzato la sua opera. Iniziò la sua carriera all’età di 14 anni come apprendista presso un incisore, dove rimase per sette anni. Le sue prime opere, come Songs of Innocence (1789) e Songs of Experience (1794), furono stampate utilizzando il suo innovativo metodo di incisione a rilievo, che combinava testo e disegno: egli le definiva «libri miniati». L’opera di Blake esplorava spesso temi quali la spiritualità, l’immaginazione e la condizione umana, sfidando le norme convenzionali del suo tempo. Nonostante le critiche e l’oscurità subite durante la sua vita, l’approccio innovativo di Blake all’arte e alla poesia gli è valso il riconoscimento postumo come pioniere del movimento romantico.
L’opera di Blake comprende oltre una dozzina di libri miniati oltre alle sue Songs, tra cui The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790-1793) e Jerusalem (1804-1820), oltre a stampe, dipinti e disegni.
