Born in Vienna in 1905, Paalen grew up between Austria and Germany before studying in Berlin and Paris. By the mid-1930s he had joined André Breton’s Surrealist circle, exhibiting alongside many of the movement's leading figures. During this period, he developed his celebrated fumage technique, creating unpredictable forms by allowing candle smoke to leave traces on the canvas. The resulting paintings occupy a space between abstraction and figuration, with ethereal imagery emerging from chance effects, seen in works such as L’autophage (Fulgurites) (1938).
After the outbreak of World War II, Paalen emigrated to Mexico in 1939 at the invitation of Frida Kahlo — a move that profoundly reshaped his practice. Immersing himself in the study of pre-Columbian cultures, Indigenous cosmologies and contemporary scientific thought, he produced paintings that questioned conventional ideas of time and space. In 1942, he founded the influential journal DYN, using it to move beyond accepted Surrealist beliefs and methods, and advance new dialogues between art, science and anthropology that would shape a younger generation of artists. He died in 1959.
While closely associated with Surrealism, Paalen anticipated many of the defining concerns of post-war abstraction. His atmospheric compositions and emphasis on process influenced the development of Abstract Expressionism, particularly among artists working in New York during the 1940s. Today, Paalen is recognised as a pivotal figure whose interdisciplinary approach expanded the possibilities of modern painting, with his work represented in major international collections, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Tate Britain in London.
