A framed chromogenic print of a publicity photo of Marilyn Monroe, the source image for Andy Warhol’s iconic paintings, is hung on top of the salvaged walls. The image was taken by Harrison on a visit to the Warhol archives in Pittsburgh. It is her gloved hand in the photo, seen lifting the glassine that houses the stock image that Warhol used for his Marilyn Monroe series. The walls in Harrison’s sculpture form a material archive of previous exhibitions, echoing Warhol’s impulse to archive his own life—most famously in his Time Capsules, in which he filled 569 cardboard boxes, 40 filing cabinet drawers, and a large steamer trunk with personal material and ephemera.

To date, variants of Marilyn with Wall have been constructed on-site for exhibitions at Greene Naftali Gallery, New York (2004 and 2017); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2004); Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale-on Hudson (2009); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2010); Regen Projects, Los Angeles (2015); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2016); Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo (2018); and Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo (2022).
