Descrizione dettagliata lotto
Already a significant rarity and very seldom seen on the open market is the platinum cased ‘Tank Normale’. The present extraordinary vintage example is even rarer in having a natural lapis-lazuli hardstone dial. Possibly a one-off creation, to the best of our knowledge no other examples are known publicly. This ravishing timepiece was made in 1973 during the period when Cartier Paris were producing watches in very small quantities, moreover, it is confirmed by the all-important Cartier Certificate of Authenticity. The solid platinum case features a lapis-lazuli tipped winding crown and is accompanied by a white gold Milanese bracelet with deployant clasp.
The lapis-lazuli dial is striking in its simplicity, without numerals the full beauty of the stone shines through. The favourite gem of Egyptian pharaohs and Royal dynasties throughout history, not only is the deep blue colour breathtaking, but the stone’s natural inclusions add depth, movement and flair to the dial.
We know that seasoned Cartier collectors and indeed all those who love fine watchmaking will enjoy savouring this important platinum Tank Normale.
In watchmaking, platinum has traditionally always been reserved for the casing of limited editions and for timepieces that represent the very finest horological craftsmanship. The platinum wristwatches made by every famous brand and independent maker are notably the most exclusive versions of any model. Platinum possesses subtlety in its silvery-white lustre, yet at the same time is impressive in its substantial weight and presence. Although more challenging for watchmakers to work with than gold, platinum is particularly appreciated for its practicality in use, being one of the least reactive metals, it has a remarkable resistance to corrosion, does not tarnish and is resistant to wear.
Cartier Tank Normale
One of the most difficult to find of Cartier’s Tank models, the ‘Tank Normale’ was the earliest of all Tank wristwatches. Originally inspired by the Renault tanks that the firm's founder Louis Cartier had seen in use on the Western Front during the First World War. The model was introduced in 1918, entering full production in 1919. The original prototype watch was given by Louis Cartier to the American General, John Pershing. One of the great design classics of the 20th century, the Tank is both a square and a rectangle at the same time. Many of the characteristic design elements of the Tank were introduced on the Normale.
