Lot Essay

Ren Huanzhang, courtesy name Weishan and also known as Nanqiao or Nanqiaozi, was active between 1874 and 1902. During the late Qing Dynasty, he served as a painter at the Imperial Kiln site, specializing in figure and landscape paintings. His figures and birds are imbued with an ethereal, transcendent quality, and his landscapes convey a profound and distant atmosphere, marking him as a pioneer among literati-style porcelain painters.
