CASE: with serpent handle over concave moulded top with ribbon-tied foliate mounts, flowerhead bosses to the sides, toupie feet DIAL: white enamel, signed 'hubert Sarton/A LIEGE', blued steel hands MOVEMENT: single chain fusee for going train and going barrel for strike train, verge balance escapement with regulation disc to the side, strike work to the back plate, pull wind alarm and quarter strike/repeat on two bells

Hubert Sarton (1748-1828) was Belgium's greatest clockmaker. Born in Liège, he was apprenticed to his uncle, Dieudonne Sarton, in 1762 and by 1768 was working at Pierre Leroy's workshop in Paris. In 1772 he was appointed Court Mechanic to Duke Charles Alexander, Prince of Lorraine.
