The introduction of platinum to Cartier's workshops at the turn of the 20th Century allowed the creation of such fine settings that diamonds appeared to be sewn onto the fabric ribbons apon which they were mounted. These fabric backings could be interchangeable allowing a jewel to seemlessly meld with the clothing of the wearer, an innovation typical of the mastery of Cartier.
