Late 19th/20th century, impressed monogram and sceptre mark, H, 315_255 and triangular cypher
Finely painted after Calderon with an Orientalist view of a supplicant family pleading for mercy as a Moorish warrior stands to one side, a burning hilltop village in the distance
12½ x 10 1/8 in. (31.6 x 25.7 cm.), within a red velvet and giltwood frame

Lot Essay

Philip Hermogenes Calderon, Spanish (1833-1898)
The original oil on canvas of the present lot, titled in English 'Captives of his Bow and Spear' is recorded at the London Royal Academy in 1880 and later in Hamburg at the Kunsthalle.
