The rounded sides rising to a slightly everted rim, the center of the interior decorated with a five-petalled flower outlined in blue dots, the petals enclosing and separated by florets with amber dot centers, all below streaks of blue glaze reserved on a clear glaze over a white slip ending above the foot on the exterior to expose the pinkish buff ware

Lot Essay

The style of painting on this bowl is rather unusual, but can be seen on a bowl formerly in the Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman, sold in these rooms, Important Tang Dynasty Sancai-Glazed Pottery, 20 March 2001, lot 146. See, also, the jar in the Museum of Decorative Art, Copenhagen, painted in blue on a white ground with pendent fish and similar florets, and with similar blue streaks on the rim, illustrated in Sekai toji zenshu, vol. 11, Japan, 1976, col. pl. 51.
