Lot Essay

General Guo Ziyi (697-781), also known as Prince Zhongwu of Fenyang was a distinguished Tang-dynasty military personage, credited for putting an end to the An Lushan Rebellion (755-763) as well as campaigning against the Tibetans. In addition to his military success and public popularity, many of his children went on to become respected military officials in their own right.

Because of his successes in work and in family, in art he is depicted in various media in his old age holding a birthday banquet surrounded by family members and followers, conveying a wish for longevity, wealth, and rank.
