Such water ewers were used in Buddhist ritual. The stern lines of the piece and the energetic though simple sculpture of the karashishi on the cover are indicative of early bronze religious sculpture. An inscription inside the box lid states this ewer is identical to two in the Kosanji Temple, Hiroshima and the Seishu Raigoin Temple in Shiga Prefecture, both of which are registered as Juyo Bunkazai [Important Cultural Properties]
