First recorded in 1611 after having just been found at Nettuno, the original was in the Borghese collection by 1613. It was subsequently placed in a room named after the sculpture on the ground floor of the Villa Borghese. The sculpture was purchased by Napoleon Bonaparte, brother-in-law of Camillo Borghese, in 1807 and placed in the Salle d'Apollon of the Musée Napoléon. The original is today at the Musée du Louvre.
