Lot Essay

The present bust represents the emperor Antoninus Pius, the second of the 'bearded emperors'. He was adopted by the Emperor Hadrian at the age of 51, not least because he was thought to represent a safe pair of hands to rule the empire until the favoured young Marcus Aurelius was old enough to succeed. In the end, Antoninus ruled longer than either Hadrian or Marcus Aurelius. His reign was marked by prosperity and stable government, and he was widely mourned at his death in 161AD.
