The present bust is carved after the antique prototype of the so-called Capitoline Antinous, which was discovered in the 1730s at Hadrian's Villa, Rome. Ceded to the French in 1787-8 under the Treaty of Tolentino it was returned in 1816 and was displayed in the reorganised Capitoline Museum, where it still resides.
