Lot Essay

William De Morgan (1839-1917) was a leading Arts and Crafts designer who innovated pottery design and technique during the late 19th century. Many of the vibrant patterns he produced, incorporating flowers, foliage and grotesque animals, were brought to life with rich lustre glazes inspired by 9th century Persian techniques - and illustrated by those in this lot. Two of the four lustre tiles are called 'BBB' and were named after the Norwich based brass and iron foundry, Barnard, Bishop and Barnard, who used the tiles in cast iron fireplaces. The 'BBB' became probably the most popular design that De Morgan produced.
