Lot Essay

A similar plate by the same maker from the Isher collection, engraved 'THE GIFT IS SMALL, THE LOVE IS ALL 1674' is illustrated in Pewter at Colonial Williamsburg, John D. Davis, pp. 48-49 No. 38. The style of the engraving on this dish is unusual if not unique in pewter and the lettering around the border can be compared to brass warming pans of the period
