The present pieces come from a 315 piece service ordered in 1868 by Mrs. Grant from Daniel Amren, a merchant in China. Delivered the following year, it is believed to have been used by the Grants during their time at the White House. See Herbert, Peter and Nancy Schiffer, China for America, Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th Centuries, Exton, PA, 1980, p. 83.
